ARE you ready for the summer? The school has been out for some time and for sure, many have made vacation plans.
There are numerous places to go, depending on your interest and budget. One does not have to go far to take a vacation.
Negros Occidental, our province, has a lot to offer - beautiful resorts and historic places. There are several remarkable ancestral houses to visit.
It is noteworthy to mention that there was a time when Negros became "Republic of Negros," an independent republic. This happened after two Negrense Generals Aniceto Lacson and Juan Araneta led a revolt that ended more than three hundred years of foreign invasion.
General Aniceto Lacson became the President and the presidential home, the Malacanang, was in Talisay. The home is still there but sadly, it is not open to the public.
"Balay ni Tan Juan Araneta" is in Bago City. It would be interesting to re-learn history. There are other old but beautiful homes to visit.
The sugar industry made a lot of Negrenses wealthy and marked Negros on the map. The industry had its ups, downs and has risen again, not as glamorous, but it is operational.
It is fascinating to know how sugar is made. Some milling companies are open for educational tours. One has to write the president of the company to schedule.
Negros has survived many challenges but in the end, it has discovered that there is more than just sugar from Negros. Every town and city has its own wonderful products, worthy of national and international selling.
Let us be proud of our heritage.
