BACOLOD City Mayor Evelio Leonardia has asked Councilor Cindy Rojas to head the task force to study the project to put up a crematorium, as well as the rehabilitation and improvement of the existing public cemeteries in the city.
Leonardia said Rojas already agreed and it's just a matter of time that he will issue an executive order.
He said the task force will also study the possibility of constructing a new public cemetery.
The city-owned cemeteries are in Burgos and in Barangays Granada, and Handumanan.
For her part, Rojas said she will wait for the executive order from the mayor to start the study of the project.
She said they will determine the possible site for the city-owned crematorium as well as the services that will be offered.
Rojas noted that they will tap a private company from Manila to help them with the study.
"We will also study the rehabilitation and improvement of public cemeteries particularly at the Burgos Public Cemetery because it's already congested," Rojas said.
"If we have the new cemetery, the Burgos public cemetery will no longer accept a new burial, but the cemetery is still open," she added
In 2017, the City Health Office conducted an inspection at the Burgos Public Cemetery as part of its routine assessment and several concerned has been noted.
The CHO strongly recommended the prohibition to inter bodies at the cemetery as soon as possible until complete rehabilitation has been done to safeguard and ensure public health.
