DENGUE cases in Bacolod City from January 1 to August 4, 2018, decreased by 41 percent compared to the same period last year, records at the City Health Office (CHO) showed.
Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environment Sanitation Division, said they listed 508 cases with three deaths from January to August 4 compared to 2017's 859 cases with seven deaths.
She said this year, the first fatality was a six-year-old girl from Barangay Sum-ag and another two boys aged six and 11, who succumbed to dengue in March.
Of the 508 cases, Barangay Handumanan has the highest number of cases with 47.
Others are Barangay Taculing with 45 cases; Barangay Mansilingan, 43; Barangay Sum-ag, 41; Barangay Villamonte, 39; Barangay Singcang-Airport, 34; Barangay Alijis, 27; Barangay Estefania, 25; Barangays Mandalagan and Tangub, 24 each; Barangay Granada, 23; Barangay Punta Taytay, 16; Barangay Banago, 15; Barangay Bata 12 and Barangays Vista Alegre and Felisa, nine each.
Tan said these barangays had the highest number of population in Bacolod, adding it shows that mosquitoes are highly domesticated in the overcrowded areas.
She said in previous months, Barangay Taculing has the highest number of cases, and now it is Barangay Handumanan.
"We need the participation of the community to destroy the breeding places of mosquitoes. This is not just a project of the local government unit (LGU), CHO or the Department of Health (DOH), but it's a participation of all sectors including the households or the community," she added.
Tan disclosed that they already talked with several village chiefs for the implementation of their plans and programs to address the dengue cases within their respective barangays.
