NEGROS Occidental Schools Division Superintendent Portia Mallorca reminded the parents that it's their call not to allow their children to go school if the weather condition poses danger to them.
Mallorca made the reminder as the rainy season has already started according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
She said that although the Department of Education (DepEd) has already existing guidelines about the suspension of classes relative to the tropical depression.
Classes in affected areas are automatically suspended based on the Pagasa declared storm signals while the local government units (LGUs) will decide whether to suspend the classes during calamities, in the absence of a storm signal.
DepEd reiterated this to guide parents and help ensure the safety of students in the event of typhoons, flooding, and other weather disturbances and calamities.
Cancellation and suspension of classes are observed directly from the weather bulletins.
Classes in the affected areas shall be automatically canceled or suspended once the Pagasa raised the following storm signals:
• Signal No.1, public and private pre-school and kindergarten classes;
• Signal No. 2, public and private pre-school, kindergarten, elementary and high school classes (including Senior High School) and;
• Signal No. 3, classes in all levels.
Meanwhile, Mallorca emphasized that enrollment of the students in all levels is still ongoing.
"Hopefully we will get the final enrollment by end of June," Mallorca said.
But she said that accepting transferees is ongoing.
She said that DepEd has the quick count where the encoding of enrollment at all levels are generated to the central office through the Learners Information System (LIS).
As to the shortage of classrooms, Mallorca said they have the target number of classrooms that will be completed this month of June.
She said that there is an ongoing bidding for the construction of classrooms to address the requests of the schools. (TDE/VoxPop Bacolod)
