IN CELEBRATION of Earth Day's 50th anniversary on April 22, 2020, the Diocese of San Carlos City initiated digital activities to encourage human solidarity and to show care for Mother Earth while staying safe at home.
The Earth Day celebration on Wednesday is also the first anniversary of the Diocesan-wide human chain which was participated by all the parishes from La Libertad, Negros Oriental to Manapla, Negros Occidental on Earth Day 2019 to oppose the planned coal-fired power plant in San Carlos City. The human chain was inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical letter "Laudato Si" on the "Care for our Common Home".
As for 2020, with social distancing restrictions in places around the world to fight the spread of coronavirus, Earth day will be celebrated online. The Diocese of San Carlos is encouraging everyone to participate in the following activities to stand up for Mother Earth as a form of human chain but through a different platform:
1. TikTok Earth day dance challenge which we will later form into a virtual human chain for Earth Day on April 22, 2020;
2. Use of Earth day FB profile picture frame by PYO San Carlos;
3. Best two-minute video post of our human chain last year with updated theme: "Human solidarity: Care for our common home & against Covid-19!";
4. A chain song interpretation of "Together we can change the world" music;
5. Parishes are encouraged to create initiatives to share like starting a vlog on how to care for our common home, e.g., how to conserve water, how to start vertical gardening or composting, etc.
Earth day is an event celebrated every year on the 22nd of April. The event is held worldwide to celebrate support for the protection of the environment and has continuously drawn more and more people in each subsequent year. Earth Day brings attention to a large number of issues requiring our urgent and active involvement and participation, such as pollution of the ocean, debris leftover on land, climate change, conservation of the Earth's ecosystems, energy conservation, soil corruption, corrosion, overpopulation, nuclear issues, the depletion of the ozone layer, the depletion of the Earth's natural resources, the introduction of wastes and toxicants into the wilderness and the seas, nanotechnology, and the deforestation of rain forests.
Even small contributions can make a big difference; with all our efforts. This is another way of living out out battle cry: "Ubuntu: I am because we are!" Together we stand as one! (PR)
