NEGRENSE youth belonging to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem) strand senior high school graduating class may now apply for the 2019 Undergraduate Science and Technology (S&T) Scholarship program of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
Negros Occidental Provincial Science and Technology Director Engr. Allan Francis Dara-ug highlighted that the scholarship is DOST's quest toward honing a pool of key players in S&T and allied fields.
The types of scholarship grants include Republic Act 7687 and the DOST Merit Scholarship Program.
Dubbed as the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, R.A. 7687 offers a scholarship to talented and deserving students whose families' socioeconomic standing do not surpass the cut-off values of certain indicators.
Meanwhile, the DOST Merit Scholarship Program is granted to students with high ability in science and mathematics.
Those scholarship qualifiers who graduated from non-Stem strand class, on the other hand, may avail of the scholarship on the first semester of the school year 2019-2020 as long as they are admitted in any of the S&T programs covered by the scholarship in an accredited university.
Dara-ug said that DOST scholars may enjoy privileges such as tuition and school fees, book allowance, group insurance, transportation allowance for those studying outside of the home province, monthly living allowance of PhP7,000.00 and post-graduation clothing allowance.
After graduation, the scholar-graduates are required to render full-time service along with their areas of expertise in the country for a minimum period corresponding to the length of time they enjoyed the scholarship.
At present, Negros Occidental has 341 DOST scholars for this academic year.
Application forms are now available at the Negros Occidental Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) at Cottage Road, Bacolod City. It can also be downloaded at www.sei.dost.gov.ph.
