BACOLOD City Councilor Cindy Rojas urged the Department of Public Services (DPS) to lead the celebration of the national zero waste month this month.
Rojas, chairperson of the City Council committee on environment and ecology, said the Presidential Proclamation No. 760, dated May 5, 2014, mandates that the whole month of January shall be known as "Zero Waste Month."
She said that pursuant to the above policy, zero waste is advocacy that promotes designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, and to conserve and recover all resources, and not indiscriminately dispose or burn them.
She added that zero waste is a goal that ethical, economical, efficient and visionary to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.
Rojas noted the Republic Act No. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, promotes environmental awareness and action among the citizenry and institutionalizes public participation in the development of national and local integrated, comprehensive and ecological waste management program.
"Zero waste is the end goal of Bacolod City's pilot project of waste segregation at source under its solid waste management program, in compliance with RA 9003," Rojas said.
