BACOLOD City Representative Greg Gasataya urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to be straight on the implementation of the school building projects in various public schools in the city.
Gasataya said the DPWH should monitor the accomplishments of school building contractors to ensure they will meet the deadline for their projects.
"It is now the opening of classes and our students really need the classrooms," he said.
If the contractors fail to meet the deadline of their works, the DPWH should impose sanctions and penalties immediately, Gasataya said.
"There should be no sacred cows here because the classrooms are necessary and vital needs of our students," he said.
District Engineer Abrahan Villareal earlier said that they are monitoring the construction of school buildings in Bacolod.
Villareal said he will talk to contractors to finish the constructions as soon as possible for the school opening this year.
He said they have ongoing construction works in the areas of Negros Occidental High School and Emiliano Lizares National High School, among others, adding that some of the projects were only awarded in January and the contractors are scheduled to finish the project within a year.
Meanwhile, Gasataya also lauded the accomplishments of the DPWH for ranking sixth among the top 20 Deo's Highest Absorptive Capacity in the country in the first quarter of 2018.
They got a score of 82 percent of Absorptive Capacity tied with the Deo's of Rizal, Bukidnon, and Cavite.
Gasataya said it is a good record for the DPWH, but they still need to improve more the implementation of projects in Bacolod in terms of road safety projects among others.
"I am appealing to them to improve more because there are a lot of things that need to be improved here," he said.
