BACOLOD City Councilor Ricardo Tan urged the City Health Office (CHO) to initiate programs that provide free medical and eye checkup to the public elementary and high school students in the city.
Tan said students in public elementary and high schools are often susceptible to various illnesses because of lack resources and poverty.
"They do not have easy access to doctors and other professional help so we need to help them," he said.
He added the healthy body and good eyesight are two important factors that affect the learning of students.
Tan noted the CHO could also tap the concern and resources of private medical practitioners, civic and professional clubs to help the students.
"A civic and professional clubs may adopt a school and provide free medical and eye checkup, if possible, including free medicines, to the students who need those things," Tan said.
Furthermore, Tan also requesting the Local School Board (LSB) and the City Engineering Office (CEO) to inventory the number of comforts rooms in various public schools.
Tan said the LSB and CEO should conduct an inventory of the comfort rooms of the public schools and allocate the necessary budget for its development as well as to provide janitorial services to them.
Tan said tidy, clean and sanitary public school comfort rooms are an indispensable ingredient of health and welfare of students.
"Because of the growth of enrollment, the public schools now need additional comfort rooms inside the school campus and the provision of janitorial services to maintain the same," he said.
Tan disclosed that with the introduction of the K-12 Program in the educational system, the number of students enrolled in public elementary and high schools has increased. (MAP)
