OUTGOING Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., defended the construction of the Negros First Global Institute of Technology (NFGIT) in Talisay City after students from the Rafael B. Lacson Memorial High School protested the project.
According to Marañon, the students of the high school will also benefit from the construction of the NFGIT, and it is possible that they misunderstood their intentions.
He also pointed out that the 2.5-hectare lot where the facility will stand is owned by the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental.
The outgoing governor also assured the students that the City Government of Talisay is currently planning to construct a sports complex with the help of the Provincial Government.
He said he still respects the rights of the students to air their sentiments.
Marañon led the ground breaking ceremony for the NFGIT Monday, June 3.
Once completed, the P135 million project will be comprised of administrative offices, classrooms, and a dormitory for students.
The facility is also set to become the new home for the Negros Occidental Language and Information Technology Center.
The students, however, protested the project as they claimed the construction would destroy the school's oval, which is used as training grounds for school athletes.
