BACOLOD City Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. will hold a public hearing on the proposed ordinance prohibiting the distribution of plastic straw in the city on Thursday, September 13.
Gamboa, who authored the proposed ordinance, said on Tuesday, September 11, the hearing will be attended by various plastic distributors, supermarket, and restaurant owners at the City Council at 2 p.m.
"We aim to eliminate the distribution of plastic straw, except for medical purposes only," he said.
He added they will also discuss the illegal dumping of garbage in canals or manholes that causes floods in various areas.
Gamboa noted that there are environmentally-friendly straws that can be used as an alternative to plastic straws such as made of paper, plant, vegetable and other natural products.
Gamboa said the use of eco-friendly materials can save the marine resources severely affected by plastic waste, and the plastic straws contain materials that cannot easily be decomposed and thus brought environmental pollution.
Section 6 of the proposed ordinance stated that vending or selling, delivering or deploying and giving or distributing for any purpose of plastic straws, whether or not to be used for any kind of beverage is prohibited.
