A TRUCK driver, whose truck was rammed by a businessman and his two companions that resulted in their untimely death, was released after his reglementary period lapsed Monday evening, October 12, 2020.
Police Major Charles Gever, chief of Police Station 8, said Wednesday they released Michael Mejica, 42, of Kabankalan City around 8 p.m. after the lapse of the 18-hour reglementary period.
He said Mejica already talked with the family of the victims Stanley Flores, 40, a businessman; Welton Porcel, 42; and his nephew Mark John Porcel, 19, all residents of Barangay Villamonte.
Investigation showed Flores was driving his Ford Mustang vehicle with his passengers, Welton and Mark John, around 1 a.m. when he crashed into a truck driven by Mejica.
Flores, who was traveling in the north direction, was tailing the truck.
The victims sustained serious injuries and died on the spot.
Gever said there was already an initial settlement with the family of the victims.
He said Mejica, who voluntarily surrendered at the station, told the police that he thought his tire exploded. When he checked the tire, he saw the vehicle of the victims pinned down under the truck.
He added they could not determine yet whether Flores had fallen asleep or was under the influence of liquor.
