AFTER successive vehicular accidents last week on Kennon Road, Benguet Governor Crescencio Pacalso called on the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to install additional signages for the safety of motorists.
Pacalso made the call as he noted that some of the road accidents are caused by drivers' error.
"As reported by DPWH, first hindrance is the budget, but they try to do some remedial measure while waiting for an excisable budget to address totally the problem," said Pacalso.
Tuba Municipal Police Station Chief Inspector James Acod is seeking to close the road for one or two hours.
DPWH Benguet First Assistant District Engineer Benedicta Mendoza said they have installed a tarpaulin to warn motorists going to Kennon road.
"Last week, just after the incident, we have put up a huge tarpaulin. Kennon road is dangerous especially on rainy days. But once it is not totally close, they will take the risk," Mendoza added.
On May 20, a van was hit by boulders rolling from the mountain at Sitio Kaipilan Barangay Camp 3 in Tuba that incurred seven injuries including two minors.
Two days after, two senior citizens were declared dead on the spot including four minors injured after being run over by a sports utility vehicle in Sitio Canubas, Camp 4.
On May 24, along Camp 5, an elf truck collided with a black motorcycle. The motorcycle encroached on the opposite lane and collided with the truck.
Meanwhile, on the same day, another accident at Marcos highway in Bontiwey, Poblacion involving an Isuzu truck and a 10-wheeler truck where its driver sustained a minor injury.
Mendoza added a house bill is currently in the works for the road to undergo rehabilitation that will include rock netting to prevent rock slides.
A technical working group will be coming to inspect Kennon road later this month.
