YOUTH organizations in Baguio and Benguet lodged opposition on the passage of the anti-terror law.
Cielo Marie Esmeria, Youth Act Now Against Tyranny Baguio-Benguet co-convenor, said the statement of opposition was signed by 62 organizations and 229 individuals.
The statement said democracy-loving citizens and youth of Baguio-Benguet recognize the sanctity of democracy and it is their rightful duty as Filipino youth to help protect it as the groups were unified in opposition to the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, which according to them contain broad and vague definitions of terrorism that can be further abused by authorities to arrest and detain critics, dissenters, and progressive individuals.
"Fighting for truth, justice, and our country's democracy is not a crime! We unite together to #ResistAsOne against all these atrocities committed against the youth and the general public during this pandemic. There is no room for oppressive polices nor fascist attacks especially during a time wherein the medical needs of the Filipino masses are of the upmost importance. We call on our fellow youth to continue to demand and fight for people's rights! Resist as one," said the statement.
Signatories added "democracy requires of us to demand transparency from the government, speak up against injustices, and ensure that the voice of the marginalized are heard by those in power. However in fulfilling these civic duties, the youth are met with tyranny through the form of vile attacks terrorist-tagging, death threats, and political vilification. We call for the immediate, efficient, and free mass testing of our frontliners, including, but not limited to health workers, utility workers, delivery personnel, security personnel, and members of skeletal workforces in government offices, banks, schools and essential businesses. This is a key factor in ensuring that resumption of mass transportation, on-site classes, and workforces will be safe from Covid-19 transmission."
The groups added they denounce all attacks, characterized by defamation and intimidation, done by state and anonymous fascist elements on youth organizations, cultural organizations, school organizations, publications, institutions, volunteer organizations, their members, and other individuals.
"These malicious acts in no way counter terrorism, but rather becomes the very thing it seeks to quell-an act of terror. We decry all human rights violations committed nationwide by armed forces and various branches of the government during the community quarantine period. The recorded cases of killing, rape, inhumane treatment, arrest and illegal detention of civilians should be brought to justice with full observance of the law," the statement added.
