AFTER a Burnham Lake diver died last week, improvement of park security is being pressed by local lawmakers.

Councilor Elmer Datuin said the city must now improve its security detail at Burnham to prevent future drowning incidents like the one on May 31 when a 16-year-old plunged to his death at the manmade lake.

Two witnesses from a nearby establishment saw the minor running towards the deserted lake and dove.

The witnesses came to his aid and tried to convince him to swim back but were ignored.

Witnesses added they watched helplessly as the victim sank while they called for help.

Senior Police Officer 4 Miguel Gayaden from the Tourist Police Unit of the Baguio City Police Office (TPU-BCPO) rushed the victim to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center but the minor passed away a few hours after.

"Police visibility is important so that teenage gangs will avoid the area," Datuin added.

In 2017, Councilor Leandro Yangot sought to mandate lifeguards even at the lake in a bid to save lives.

The proposed law mandates all Burnham boat concessionaires including owners and operators of swimming pools, resorts to employ lifeguards or trained provisions of emergency medical services during operating hours.

There are at least six boat operators in the lake area where boat rides are offered and has been a traditional recreational activity for locals and visitors alike.

In the ordinance, there should be equipment for rescue as well as provisions for first responders as well as signages and the presence of certified lifeguards.

The law was directed for daytime operations of the lake where it is frequented by locals and tourists alike.
