BARANGAY tanods in Cagayan de Oro City will soon be well-trained security force in their barangay as police will teach them basics on citizen's arrest and arresting techniques, among others.
The city government initiates a three-day basic orientation training to equip them with the necessary skills.
The first batch of the Barangay Tanod Basic Orientation Training, attended by some 200 tanods started Friday, August 10 to 12, 2018, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at East Gusa National High School.
The first batch came from Barangays 1-20 and those barangays covered under Police Precinct 9 particularly barangays Macasandig and Nazareth, City Barangay Coordinator Oliver Egypto of the Office for Community Affairs (OCA) said.
During the three-day training, participants are expected to learn the basics on patrol operation, citizen's arrest and arresting technique, traffic operation, intelligence gathering, crime scene protection and preservation, gender sensitivity, among others.
Earlier, the City Council has passed an ordinance creating a Barangay Tanod Committee in a bid to strengthen the interplay between village officials and police in their effort to stop proliferation of crimes and illegal drugs in Cagayan de Oro villages.
The chairman of the committee is the chief of police of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) Senior Superintendent Nelson Aganon, while the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will be the vice-chairman.
Mayor Oscar Moreno said that the new committee shall look for efficient and younger barangay tanods, and come up with an over-all strategy on how to curb criminality.
The committee will also set standards and qualifications in the selection process of barangay tanods.
