CITY Councilor Edna Dahino wants to integrate into school subjects current issues that focus on how children can protect themselves against sexual exploitation, following child trafficking incident here on October 8.
Dahino said she will arrange a meeting with the Department of Education (DepEd) officials to know their efforts against sexual abuse and how the City Government can help in raising awareness.
Police report showed that rape cases in Cagayan de Oro rose from 43 to 50 this year.
"We really want to educate students especially those who are still in the elementary level because they are still in their formative years. We have to maintain a safe, protective, and caring environment for our children," she said.
"We want to raise awareness on the extent of sexual abuse to a child's life for this could affect his or her personality and relations towards friends and family. We want them to be informed that this can actually be prevented and we have programs dedicated to solve this problem," she added.
On Monday, Oct. 8, police pressed charges against three men for alleged child trafficking after they were caught occupying two rooms with nine minors at an inn along Osmeña-Luna streets, Cagayan de Oro City.
Checking inns and motels is now a priority of the Regulatory Complaint Board (RCB) following an executive order issued by City Mayor Oscar Moreno to act on the numerous reports of child trafficking and prostitution in Cagayan de Oro.
These inns or motels being checked are allegedly where the rape cases occurred.
