THE seven activists and a bystander who were arrested on June 5, 2020, for mass gathering at the University of Philippines (UP) Cebu Campus were released from police custody at around 6 p.m. on Monday, June 8.
Cebu City MTCC Branch 4 Judge Jenelyn Villaceran Forrosuelo ordered the release of Jaime Paglinawan of Bayan Central Visayas, Johanna Veloso of National Union of Students of the Philippines and Sangguniang Kabataan, UP Diliman alumnus Al Ingking, Bern Cañedo of YANAT Cebu and UP Cebu University Student Council, Dyan Gumanao of Kabataan Partylist, Nar Porlas of Anakbayan Cebu, Janry Ubal of Food Not Bombs Cebu, and the bystander Clement Corominas.
The court released the Cebu 8 without bail.
The eight were facing charges for violating Section 13 of the Public Assembly Act of 1985 (B.P. 880); Section 9 (e) of the Law on Reporting of the Communicable Diseases (R.A. No. 11332) and a simple resistance and disobedience to an agent of a person in authority under Article 151 paragraph 2 of the Revised Penal Code, cases that fall under Rule on Summary Procedure.
Meanwhile, King Anthony Perez, media liaison of Cebu 8's legal team confirmed that they are on the process of case building.
"We are gathering solid evidence so that our charges will stand in the court," said Perez.
Though the court ordered to release Cebu 8, their case will continue and the eight were given 10 days to comment on the charges filed against them. (KFD)
