UNIVERSITY of the Visayas (UV), University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) walked away with crowns in their respective age groups in Division 1 of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) 3rd Conference on Saturday, March 16, at the SHS-AdC Mango Avenue campus gym.
USPF scored a huge 57-55 upset over defending champions UV in the Under-15 championship game.
UV, which came into the game unbeaten in the season, took control early in the game and led 28-25 at halftime in a neck-to-neck battle.
USPF, however, had a strong third period and outscored UV, 16-9, to take a 41-37 lead going into the final quarter.
UV started strong in the fourth and regained the lead, 42-41, with a three-pointer by Christian Alilin and a two-point basket by Neil Fajardo.
Both schools took turns taking the lead in a hard-fought fourth quarter.
Fajardo tied the game at 52-52 after splitting his free throws. UV's Jeric Niño Yerro and USPF's Eldie Sevillejo then missed both their free throws.
But Sevillejo redeemed himself after hitting his next two free throws to give USPF the lead, 54- 52, with 30 seconds remaining.
Jerwin Espina then scored a basket with seven seconds left to give the Baby Panthers a four-point, 56-52, that more or less sealed the game.
Alilin had a final attempt and hit a three- pointer to trim it down to a single point, but there was no more time left on the clock.
Kline Ochavo and Sevillejo led USPF's charge with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Alilin led UV with 13 markers.
Reigning titleholders UV, on the other hand, totally outclassed rival school SHS-AdC, 57-25, to win the Under-12 title.
The Baby Green Lancers dominated the Magis Eagles and led from start to finish.
Jan Mark Toring had a 17-point performance to lead UV, while Neil Dave Sinoy added nine.
Foiland Maglasang was SHS-Ad's leading scorer with just seven markers.
Meanwhile, SHS-AdC ended Sisters of Mary School (SMS) Boystown with a 52-41 win in the Under- 18 finals.
Following a strong third quarter, SMS Boystown took a 31-30 lead entering the fourth.
However, SHS-AdC took over in the final period and outgunned SMS Boystown, 22 -10, to win the title.
It was a total team effort by SHS-AdC with 14 points by Tracy Dadang and nine points each by Josiah Villamayor, Reymark Narbasa and Kurt Laput.
Elizalde Abella scored a game high of 22 points in a losing effort by SMS Boystown. In Division 2, Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) dropped UV, 40-35, for the Under-10 crown.
UV-B thrashed University of San Carlos (USC) North-B, 43-25, for the Under-12 title.
