A WOMAN died after the motorcycle she was riding was hit by a van on the Cebu South Coastal Road in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City past 5 a.m. Thursday, October 25.
The fatality was identified as Abegail Uy, who succumbed to injuries in the head and other parts of her body.
Investigation showed Uy was the back rider of the motorcycle driven by her live-in partner Joseph Balangegue. The victim was clutching her two-month-old baby.
They were on their way home to Talisay City when a Mazda Bongo driven by Ronald Banga hit the rear of the motorcycle.
The van dragged the motorcycle a few meters before it stopped.
Uy, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown off with Balangegue and their child. They were rushed to a hospital but Uy did not survive.
Cebu City Traffic Group Chief Dexter Basirgo said Banga was arrested. He said Balangegue and the baby were still under observation.
Meanwhile, last Wednesday afternoon, a five-vehicle smashup in the subway tunnel in Barangay San Roque, Cebu City spawned heavy traffic.
A delivery truck driven by Gary Panilagao, 35, was on the northbound lane of the tunnel when it hit vehicles traveling ahead of him.
The truck hit a Department of Public Works and Highways vehicle driven by Arnel Ibon, Toyota Vios driven by James Patrick Coma, Isuzu Elf driven by Wilbert Balili Noynay and an Isuzu delivery truck driven by Arnel Erato Bentulan.
Noynay was the lone driver brought to the hospital for his injuries, while others were not harmed.
Panilagao and Banga will face criminal charges if they cannot reach a settlement with the victims. (KAL)
