THE Department of Agriculture-Davao Region (DA-Davao) announced that there is enough supply of meat and livestock this holiday season.
“Okay ang atoang supply and sufficient naman sya (We have enough and sufficient supply), DA-Davao Regional Livestock Program Alternate Focal Person Dr. Karl Laurence Pineda said during the AgriBiz Year-End Media briefing on December 19, 2024.
However, the official was quick to clarify that prices depend on the farm owners and markets but assured that the increase will still be based on the price ceiling by their agency to avoid violations.
"As of now, there is no significant increase [in prices] yet. However, there might be a tendency for prices to rise depending on demand," he said.
Meanwhile, Pineda said that the demand for animal products will not affect Davao consumers despite the reports of African swine fever (ASF) recorded in several areas as of November 2024.
“Naay mga reported cases sa ubang lugar pero based on their monitoring lang. Naay pipila na pero na contain ra man pud (There are reported cases in other places but it's only based on their monitoring. There are a few but it has been contained),” he said.
Recently, a P5 million bio-secured and climate-controlled swine facility was provided to 25 farmers and fishermen from the Tiblawan Fishermen Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative (Tiffarmco) in Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, as part of the DA-11's Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (Inspire) project.
The Inspire initiative aids in the recovery and repopulation of the hog sector, especially in areas afflicted by ASF. A swine housing facility, 100 pigs, food, and biologics to increase local swine output are all included in the package.
According to Pineda, the project will contribute to the community's hog repopulation efforts. DEF
