PRICES of sugar in certain public markets in the city remains stable, according to Department of Agriculture Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (DA-Amad) Davao Region.
Data given by AMAD to VoxPop Davao, last Friday, May 4, showed that the prevailing price of brown sugar in Panacan Public Market is P40 per kilogram (kg) while white sugar is priced at P53/kg. In Agdao Public Market, brown sugar is sold for P40/kg while white sugar costs P42/kg.
In a separate monitoring conducted by VoxPop Davao at the Bangkerohan Public Market, the price of white sugar is P42/kg to P53/kg while brown sugar is sold for P40/kg. In convenience stores, however, the brown sugar is priced at P52/kg and brown sugar at P62/kg.
"Practically, the price of sugar will increase if the supply is low and the price decreases if the supply is surplus. The price of sugar also increases if the demand of the consumers is high," said DA-Amad project assistant 1 Alexander Sibuan.
He said there are a lot of factors that affect the supply of sugar including weather conditions, insect infestation, the lean or peak season, and the increase in direct cost. (Sean Belen, Father Saturnino Urios University Intern)
