THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported that the Davao Bus Project (DBP) is set to begin its pilot operations in 2027.
The pilot route of the DBP will cover the corridor from Catalunan Pequeño to Ulas, then to Bangkal, continuing through Matina, Bankerohan, Quirino, Bajada, Lanang, Buhangin, and finally Sasa.
DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, during his inspection of the construction site in Calinan District, said that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. had instructed him to fast-track the project.
“The president is really disappointed with the delays, kaya (that is why) he instructed us to fast-track this project. We need to stop making excuses and start solving problems, kasi game-changer itong project na ito (this project is a game-changer), and it will be a model system for the entire country,” he said on July 24, 2025.
As part of the preparations for the pilot operation, Dizon announced the establishment of the Davao Bus Driving Academy, which aims to professionalize public transportation driving and ensure safer roads for both commuters and motorists.
“Tapos na ‘yung mga panahong atras-abante lang ang training ng mga driver natin. Kabilin-bilinan ng Pangulo, dapat lahat ng magmamaneho ng mga bus dito sa DavaoBus ay may sapat na training para masiguro ang kaligtasan ng mga pasahero, pati na mga motorista sa kalsada,” he said.
(The days of inconsistent, stop-and-go training for our drivers are over. The President has made it clear that all drivers of DavaoBus must undergo proper training to ensure the safety of passengers as well as other motorists on the road.)
The Department of Transportation-Project Office for Davao (DOTr-Davao) confirmed on January 28, 2025, that the Bus Project is still moving forward, despite an eight-month delay. Funding is already secured, though some documentary requirements are still being processed.
The project will feature an extensive network of 29 routes covering 672 kilometers of road, connecting key areas within Davao City and extending to Panabo City. At least 1,105 buses will operate along these routes, supported by the construction of more than 1,000 bus stops.
Initially, the bus project was expected to begin operations by the end of 2024 and be fully operational by 2025. RGP
