THE Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) reported on Monday that Dabawenyos were able to immediately return to their houses after thunderstorms, caused by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, led to overflowing of rivers and street flooding across the city.
CDRRMO Head Alfredo Baloran told Madayaw that some areas in Bunawan and Lasang conducted preemptive evacuations, but residents immediately returned to their homes once the water subsided.
"Sa Bunawan ug Lasang area naa'y mga Puroks didto nga nakasinati gyud na nabahaan ang ilang ginapuy-an kay low-lying level area gyud na siya sa river tributaries. Naa ta'y gipahigayon nga preemptive evacuation sa isa ka purok didto. Purok 2-A sa Bunawan and gipahiluna nato sila sa evacuation area sa Bunawan Gym. Pagkabuntag nanguli napud ang tagbalay kay nahubas naman ang tributary,” Baloran said.
(In the Bunawan and Lasang area, some puroks experienced flooding because those are low-lying areas, near water tributaries. We conducted a preemptive evacuation in one of the puroks — Purok 2-A in Bunawan — and relocated the residents to the evacuation area at Bunawan Gym. By morning, the residents returned to their homes because the tributary had already subsided.)
While in the designated evacuation site, the residents were assisted by the City Health Office (CHO) and the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
Baloran said that the Tibungco area and downtown Davao City also experienced street flooding.
CSWDO Head Julie P. Dayaday, in an interview with Madayaw, also said that as of Monday morning, no evacuations were reported despite the street flooding.
Ancillary Services Unit (ASU) Head Paul Bermejo said that by 9 p.m. Sunday, the majority of flooded streets had already been cleared.
On Monday morning, ASU teams were dispatched to clear drainage systems in Panacan, Sasa, Tibungco, and Bunawan.
Baloran reminded Dabawenyos living along river channels and low-lying areas to stay alert in case of flooding. He also urged travelers passing through affected roads to exercise caution, especially in cases of river or drainage overflow impacting the streets. CIO
