THE first batches of the 723-member Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Eagles delegation will begin departing today from the Davao International Airport (DIA) bound for Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, in preparation for the Palarong Pambansa 2025.
This year’s national school-based sports competition is set from May 24 to June 2, 2025, and will gather elementary, high school, and special education (Sped) athletes from across the country.
The Davao Eagles delegation is composed of 595 athletes, 82 coaches, 21 assistant coaches, and 19 chaperones. Along with officials, the full contingent will total nearly 800 delegates, making it one of the largest groups in the competition.
Department of Education (DepEd) regional director Allan Farnazo confirmed during the send-off Mass held Friday morning, May 16, at Mintal Elementary School that he had already signed the authority to travel, allowing the scheduled departures to proceed.
"Kahilakon ko, teary-eyed (I got teary-eyed), seeing the athletes. I can see their focus, intensity in preparation, and strong sense of purpose," Farnazo told VoxPop Davao in an interview after the ceremony.
He also assured that all necessary arrangements have been made. The delegation had a pre-departure orientation, and the committees are fully prepared. An advance party has been stationed in Laoag City for over a month to make logistical preparations. The kitchen team assigned to prepare meals for the athletes at the billeting quarters is also ready.
"We improved our medical team, which is helpful for the kids," Farnazo added. The team now includes nurses, doctors, dentists, and physical therapists.
He also expressed excitement about their quarters in Laoag, particularly the surprise element regarding its exterior design. As in past Palaro editions, a special award will be given to the most beautifully decorated delegation quarters.
Farnazo proudly noted that the Davao delegation was recognized as the most disciplined group in the past two Palarong Pambansa events.
He reminded the athletes of their duty to represent the region with integrity:
"We represent Davao Region with respect and decency. We assume a new person. We no longer represent our homes or our LGUs. We all come from the Davao Region. We are one," he said.
Farnazo concluded by highlighting the honor bestowed upon the young athletes: "Of the 1,493,000 students in the region, you were picked to represent the region in the Palaro," he said. "That alone is something to be proud of."
