HUNDREDS of Filipino migrants, supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte, gathered outside the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, on March 14, 2025, protesting what they claim is the unconstitutional arrest of their former leader.
The demonstrators traveled from various European countries, including the Czech Republic, Belgium, France, the UK, and Germany. The protest followed an earlier rally on March 13, which coincided with Duterte’s arrival at the ICC.
Ryan Ang, an international student from Mindanao, announced that another demonstration is planned for Sunday, March 23, with details to be finalized soon.
Meanwhile, in Finland, a group of Filipinos—mostly healthcare workers—held a separate rally, marching from Kansalaistori Square to Senaatintori in Helsinki.
The protesters called for Duterte’s return to the Philippines, chanting “Du-ter-te, Du-ter-te!” and “ICC, bring him home!” They also sang songs associated with the former president, including "You Raise Me Up" and "Ipaglalaban Ko." Many shared stories about Duterte’s leadership as they gathered in Helsinki’s historic Senate Square.
According to rally participant Wizbren Ang, Helsinki police estimated the crowd was over a thousand. The demonstration caused significant traffic disruptions, even leading to a temporary suspension of one of the city's tram lines.
Duterte made his first appearance before the ICC on March 14, facing charges of crimes against humanity related to his war on drugs campaign. Both supporters and critics gathered outside the court during the hearing. The ICC Chamber confirmed Duterte’s identity, established his preferred language for the proceedings, and formally informed him of the charges. The court also ensured that Duterte understood his rights under the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC. While Duterte appeared via video conference, his legal counsel, Salvador Medialdea—his former executive secretary—was present in person.
On March 11, Duterte, 79, was arrested at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) upon his return from Hong Kong.
The ICC had issued an arrest warrant for crimes against humanity, alleging his involvement in extrajudicial killings between 2011 and 2019, including those linked to the Davao Death Squad when he was mayor of Davao City. Following his extradition to The Hague, the ICC scheduled a confirmation of charges hearing for September 23, 2025. DEF
