THE owner of Ultradynamic Fitness Gym (UD Fitness Corp) believes that heavy rainfall and ongoing construction by a national real estate company may have caused the collapse of the gym’s Davao airport branch on January 3, 2025.
Engineer Charlemagne Umpad stated that, despite no casualties, half of the gym was destroyed due to soil erosion and the nearby construction site. The damage included flooding, broken glass windows, and mud accumulation.
“Thankfully, there were no casualties. No clients were present at the time, and our staff on duty – Branch Head Earl Pasamba, Receptionist Oliver Solis, and Custodian Jay Garcia – were unharmed,” she stated.
She added that her initial assessment suggests that the combination of heavy rain and the construction work of Sta. Lucia Realty & Development, Inc. affected the area’s drainage and stability, leading to the collapse.
Umpad assured that repairs are underway, and investigations are ongoing in collaboration with local authorities. She expressed gratitude for the clients’ understanding and promised updates as the situation progressed.
“We are committed to resolving this situation promptly and efficiently. We appreciate our clients’ understanding during this time and will provide updates as they become available. Thank you for your patience and support,” Umpad said. “Moreover, UD Fitness Corp. will continue to investigate the cause of the incident with the help of the authorities. The company also committed to repair the damage and reopen the gym as soon as possible.”
As of January 6 and 7, attempts to contact Sta. Lucia's comments were unsuccessful. Sunstar Davao is open to the real estate developer’s side on the matter.
Meanwhile, Sta. Lucia is building a 28-hectare high-end subdivision, "Punta Verde," near the Davao International Airport. DEF
