The Australian government is exploring new investment opportunities in Davao City to strengthen economic ties with the Philippines.
Earlier this week, the Australian Embassy, led by Economic Counsellor Luke Villiers, visited Davao City and met with the City Council to discuss the local business climate and potential opportunities, especially in the agribusiness and manufacturing sectors.
Davao City Vice-Mayor J. Melchor Quitain Jr. highlighted the city's growing accessibility and recent progress due to economic growth and infrastructure improvements.
“We hope to surpass our revenue collections compared to last year’s, as many businesses have opened here in Davao City – big businesses, some coming from Manila and even abroad. Foreign investments are also pouring in,” Vice Mayor Quitain said.
Vice Mayor Quitain also pointed out that Davao City is enhancing its facilities to accommodate large-scale meetings, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE), a key strategy to boost the local business sector.
Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, Chairperson of the Committee on International Relations, shared that the city is offering various incentives and services to attract both local and foreign investors, with a particular focus on Australian businesses.
He also highlighted the Davao Region's recognition as one of the most peaceful cities in Southeast Asia, enhancing its appeal to investors. Alejandre invited the Australian delegation to experience the city's vibrant culture during the Kadayawan Festival in August.
In response, Luke Villiers, Counsellor from the Australian Embassy in the Philippines, e expressed Australia’s interest in expanding its investments in Southeast Asia. He noted that Davao City’s resilient and dynamic business environment makes it an attractive location for investment, and mentioned their intention to explore the city’s key economic sectors for growth.
The Davao-Australia trade relationship has flourished in recent years, especially in the export of fruits. Davao, known for its rich agricultural produce, has become a significant supplier of tropical fruits to international markets, with Australia emerging as a key trade partner.
The growth of fruit exports has been supported by improved cold chain facilities and shipping routes, allowing Davao's fresh produce to reach Australian markets with better shelf life and quality. DEF
