DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio expressed her support to the demands of the teachers for additional allowance and rice subsidy.
During the dialogue of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) - Davao City Chapter and Councilor Pilar Braga, chairperson of the committee on education, on Wednesday, September 5, Braga read a letter from the mayor assuring that she will look into their concern as soon as possible.
"With regard to your request for local allowance and rice subsidy, we shall look into this, study various factors that we need to take into consideration and get back to you as soon as we can," Braga read the letter.
Braga said the message of the mayor gives hope to the teachers by "not closing the door."
Meanwhile, the teachers said they were happy to hear the message of Mayor Duterte-Carpio.
"Naa man gud mi nadungog na si Mayor Inday daw kay nasuko sa amoa kay nag demand-demand lagi daw mi (We heard that Mayor Sara was not happy with us because of our demand)," Pardillo said during an interview with VoxPop Davao, adding that the message of support of the mayor gave them hope and eased them.
One retired teacher, Fely Venus, said that she would want teachers to avail of additional benefits because she understands the struggle during her years of service in the education sector.
She added that she also had to look for part-time jobs to provide for her family since her salary was not enough for a "decent" way of living.
"My heart has always been with teachers," Braga said.
Braga, being a teacher herself, said she understands the struggles of teachers.
