TWENTY-FOUR houses were damaged in two municipalities in Davao Oriental due to huge waves caused by Tropical storm "Maring" on Sunday evening, October 10, 2021.
According to a report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) operation center, a total of 769 families, mostly residing in coastal areas in municipalities of San Isidro and Governor Generoso, were preemptively evacuated due to threat of a storm surge.
PDRRMO reported that most of the families have already been sent home after it was declared safe. However, these families may need to go back to the evacuation centers in the event of strong winds and huge waves.
The office is currently coordinating with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of the two municipalities for any needed resource augmentation.
Meanwhile, a fishing vessel was also washed away along the shoreline of Barangay Tibanban in Governor Generoso due to huge waves. The ship (FB Leeward), however, has sustained no damage.
The Philippine Coast Guard also immediately responded to the residents' report of an oil spill which was subsequently ruled out upon further investigation.
Tropical Storm Maring, which had maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (km/hour) with gusts of up to 105 km/hour and central pressure of 985 hPa unleashed powerful winds, torrential rain and southwest monsoon-induced waves, destroying homes and left swathes of the affected areas flooded.
