ENVIRONMENTAL advocates urged farmers Friday, October 26, to join the World Food Day celebration and encouraged organic farming to produce healthy and safe foods for Davao region.
More than 180 local farmers from different areas of the region gathered at the World Palace Hotel, Davao City.
"Our goal here is zero hunger. Ang challenge lang, synthetic foods. Sa hunger man gud is dili lang himuon na accessible but also to produce healthy and safe foods (Our goal is zero hunger where one of the challenges are synthetic food production because we do not just want to make food accesible but also healthy and safe)," lawyer Mark Peñalver of Interface Development Interventions (IDIS) Inc. said in an interview with VoxPop Davao.
Peñalver also said that they have been encouraging farmers to shift to organic farming as it was the solution they see to contribute to the sustainable development goals of the city.
With the need to contribute to the sustainable development of the city, Peñalver said that the local government unit (LGU) should also help out small-scale farmers find a market for their products.
"At least diri sa Davao naa sila'y sure na market unta ug sure na buyers ng organic pud (At least here in the city, they [organic farmers] will have a sure market and buyers for their products)," he said.
Meanwhile, Chinkie Golle-Peliño, executive director of IDIS, said in a chat message to VoxPop Davao: "(The) Challenge for the LGU is to continue to support our farmers and food producers to ensure local food safety and security."
