Maglana: Test transparency, not just drugs

FIRST District Representative candidate Maria Victoria “Mags” Maglana believes that political candidates should not only undergo drug testing but also be assessed for transparency and diligence.

“Transparency test, sipag test, and other types of tests which are very important para makapaglingkod ng maayo sa mamamayan. Ananhin mo aman ang isang test na naipasa mo, pero you fail in the other tests (Transparency test, sipag test, and other types of evaluations are very important to serve the public well. What’s the use of passing one test if you fail the others?),”  Maglana said, underscoring the need for a broader standard of accountability for candidates.

Her remarks followed Vice Mayoral candidate and incumbent Councilor Bernie Al-ag’s public challenge for fellow candidates to take a hair follicle drug test. Al-ag had undergone both urine and hair tests at High-Precision Clinic in Bajada, Davao City.

Meanwhile, Maglana’s supporters held a silent rally on Roxas Avenue on Thursday afternoon, May 8. Organized by the Forum for Truth and Honesty by Women for Integrity, Transformation, and Hope (Forthwith) Davao, the event featured the distribution of flowers and leaflets to passersby and commuters.

In a statement, Forthwith voiced strong support for Maglana, citing her long-standing work in development and governance, environmental advocacy, and her role as a facilitator, trainer, organizational development specialist, and peacebuilder.

“Forthwith believes that Mags Maglana is qualified to propose better legislation crafted through consultations and dialogues with constituents, and believes in her commitment to sustain the women’s movement in Davao City; counter the prevailing decadent, feudal-patriarchal culture; and promote women’s agency in leadership and governance,” Forthwith said.  

Maglana also shared three appeals to Dabawenyos ahead of the 2025 National and Local Elections. First, she urged voters to think of the future of their children, noting that today’s votes will shape tomorrow’s society. Second, she discouraged voting for candidates with familiar surnames, arguing that democracy thrives on diversity of views and leadership. Finally, she called on the public to hold elected officials accountable after election day.

In Davao City’s First District, five candidates are vying for the congressional seat: Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, Janet Jabines, Rex Labis, Margarita “Migs” Nograles, and Mags Maglana. RGP
