MONKAYO, Davao de Oro, has been recognized as one of the National Finalists and awarded the 2024 Best CEST Special Award for Product Development during the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week. This prestigious accolade highlights Monkayo’s remarkable progress in leveraging science and technology to empower its communities, thanks to the continued support of the Department of Science and Technology Region-Davao (DOST 11).
The recognition underscores Monkayo’s achievements under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program. With over P17 million in funding from DOST XI, Monkayo has transitioned from a mining-dependent economy to a thriving hub of innovation, diversified industries, and sustainable livelihoods.
“We are proud of Monkayo’s success, which reflects the transformative power of Science and Technology,” said Dr. Anthony C. Sales, DOST 11 Regional Director.
Monkayo’s growth is visible in its booming local industries, such as jewelry making and cacao production, both of which received critical support in equipment and training from DOST XI. Beyond economic gains, the municipality has invested in health and education initiatives, including the introduction of iRice and Nutribun feeding programs, as well as the installation of STARBOOKS in remote barangays to improve access to learning resources.
Disaster preparedness and environmental initiatives, like early warning systems and waste management projects, further highlight Monkayo’s commitment to holistic community development. The municipality’s competitiveness index has risen significantly, from 211th place in 2014 to 64th in 2023, along with a substantial increase in municipal revenue from P52 million in 2015 to nearly P580 million in 2023.
As Monkayo continues to thrive, this award serves as a beacon of how Science and Technology can uplift entire communities, offering a model for other localities seeking sustainable growth. PR
