THE New Zealand Government and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) have reinforced their diplomatic ties, focusing on sustainable development and agricultural growth in Mindanao.
A meeting between New Zealand Ambassador Dr. Catherine McIntosh and MinDA Chairperson Secretary Leo Tereso Magno, held on January 13, 2025, in Davao City, discussed ongoing initiatives and new collaborations to boost the region’s economic resilience.
The discussions covered enhancing New Zealand's support for Mindanao, particularly in agriculture, education, and sustainable growth.
McIntosh reiterated New Zealand's dedication through its International Development Cooperation Program, emphasizing long-term stability and prosperity.
“The partnership between New Zealand and MinDA has been crucial in advancing agricultural productivity and economic development in Mindanao,” she said, noting the significant progress made through joint efforts.
A key topic was the Government-to-Government (G2G) Mango Project, a two-year initiative to revive Mindanao's mango industry with a US$150,000 investment. The project aims to improve mango production standards, focusing on pesticide residue issues, training pesticide operators, and promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).
Vic Lao, New Zealand Honorary Consul for Mindanao, underscored the importance of the project in ensuring Mindanao’s mangoes remain globally competitive.
“We need to implement systemic changes in our programs to improve mango production in Mindanao,” Lao said.
Magno thanked New Zealand’s continued support, noting that the region’s growing international interest is driven by improved peace and stability. “Interest in Mindanao is growing because of the peace and security we have achieved. We pledge to both domestic and foreign partners that we will simplify processes for doing business here,” he said, highlighting MinDA’s dedication to fostering a favorable investment climate.
The meeting also discussed opportunities for Mindanaoans to pursue higher education in New Zealand through scholarship grants, aiming to empower individuals with world-class education. This initiative aligns with broader goals to support regional development.
As the two countries celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, Magno noted the importance of strengthening this partnership for the advancement of Mindanao. “New Zealand has been a consistent partner in addressing key challenges in the region, and we are committed to continuing this collaboration,” he said.
The discussions are in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s priorities, particularly in promoting sustainable agriculture, rural development, and inclusive growth. Through projects like the G2G Mango Project, both nations aim to drive innovation, economic growth, and a brighter future for Mindanao and its people. DEF
