SUN.STAR Cebu featured a cyclist who has been picking trash while biking around the province of Cebu in what he calls is "SiPuk" short for "Sikad Pukaw", an attempt to raise awareness and awaken the Cebuanos about the rising level of plastic waste and its ill effects.

Anthony "Tony" Galon has been a runner for years as part of the Ultra Runners Club and is an active member of the Cebu City and the Cebu Province Environment and Natural Resources Office. He is also an advocate of the "Basura Run" and the "Run To Donate Blood" projects of Cebu Province to promote healthy living and a clean environment, Sun.Star Cebu reported.

All over the globe, there is a growing movement called "plogging" or picking trash while jogging, the 2018 fitness trend, also to raise awareness over how people indiscriminately throw their non-biodegradables at the expense of the environment.

While Dabawenyos collectively claim to be a disciplined bunch, we know very well that plastics still line our coasts and clog our drainage. Meaning, we are not as disciplined as we would want to be known.

We also know that these plastics almost always end up in beached and dead turtles and whales and dolphins. We've seen them all throughout the years. Emaciated endangered marine turtles barely alive landing on our beaches and found to be full of plastics, which they can't excrete, when veterinarians check their cause of death. We've seen just as many marine mammal ending up dead on our shores, as well, their tummies just as full of non-biodegradable garbage.

Knowing that we have a big group of bikers and runners and that our people's environmental-awareness are comparatively higher than other folks, it will not hurt if we join the trend and have fun while picking up garbage.

Why not, indeed.
