THE Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM) intercepted over P43 million worth of smuggled cigarettes on Balut Island, Davao Occidental, last February 4, 2025. The operation led to the arrest of seven individuals involved in the illegal trade.
In a report provided by NFEM Lieutenant Commander Reynante Villela, Public Affairs Officer, the confiscated materials included 1,013 master cases, which contained thousands of packs of illegal cigarettes amounting to P43,729,770.
In response to the operation, personnel from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Davao Region (PDEA-Davao) also joined the effort, bringing along their trained sniffing dogs to conduct a thorough inspection of the cargo for any possible illegal drugs.
The contraband, along with the crew under Captain Feranil Pier, was brought to Naval Station Felix Apolinario in Panacan, Davao City for documentation.
The seized cigarettes were later turned over to the Bureau of Customs and local authorities for proper disposition. The authorities ensured that all procedures were followed, as part of their continued efforts to crack down on smuggling and other illicit activities in the region.
Currently, investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the operation and to identify the responsible for the illegal shipment.
According to NFEM, the operation is seen as a significant step in curbing the illegal trade and ensuring that smuggled goods do not enter local markets, which can harm legitimate businesses and public health. DEF
