Filipino chess prodigy Christian Gian Karlo Arca (ELO 2410) earned an outright international master (IM) title after capturing the standard division crown at the 9th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship 2025, held Monday, July 28, at Zhuhai Holiday Resort in Guangdong, China.
His IM title now awaits formal approval at the next general assembly of Fide, the world’s chess governing body.
The 16-year-old Arca, who holds a Fide master (FM) title, entered the final round needing just a draw to secure the gold medal, but he chose a different path; he played to win.
Facing China's Yihang Song, Panabo City native Arca delivered a bold, calculated performance to clinch the victory and finish the tournament unbeaten.
“I’m very happy to win such a tough tournament,” Arca said. “I hope I can keep this momentum going in the rapid and blitz events too.”
Over nine rounds, Arca scored an impressive 8.0 points from seven victories and two draws.
His journey to the top included wins over tough opponents from Vietnam, Mongolia, and China, defeating the likes of Hong Quan Vo, Yibai Ren, Fide masters Khishigbat Ulziikhishig and Ivan Travis Cu, Xiaozhi Wang, An Hoa Do, and finally, Song. He drew with Kailin Chen and Zhening Hu of China in rounds six and eight, respectively.
Finishing behind Arca was FM Ulziikhishig of Mongolia, who took the silver medal with 6.5 points. Do, Hu, and Cu followed closely with 6.0 points each.
Arca’s success is backed by steady support from home. The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), under the leadership of Chairman/President Cong. Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. and CEO/Executive Director Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, along with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) led by Chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio and Commissioners Ed Hayco and Olivia “Bong” Co, continue to champion young athletes like Arca in the international arena.
