DAVAO City's cycling team is ready to do battle in the upcoming Philippine National Games 2018 in Cebu City.
"Ang mga bata natin ensayado na talaga yan. Ngayong maganda ang panahon, walang paltos ang training. Hindi tayo masi-zero sa gold nyan," said Coach Ruso Guaves, who was the guest in Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum Thursday, April 26.
He was pertaining to Melchor Labaya, Jr., Aldrin Awit, Orlando Sabijon, Richard Handumon, Jr., Brian Cantomayor, Ronnie Urdaneta, Enrico Lapitan, Carl Neville Dy, Jhustin Lim, Jason Caseras, Angelica Acedo, Liza Abellana, Myra Regine Acedo and Vian Alindao.
Guaves said the city's riders are "always prepared" as they figured in impressive finishes in just every race they joined.
He also said that members of the city's cycling team train daily - two to three hours in the morning for uphill and downhill from Ulas to Calinan and back then they resume speed training in the afternoon at the Crocodile Park grounds.
But the coach said they can't be complacent since elite riders from the national team may also compete in the Games, dubbed as the country's Olympics.
Handumon, however, is still recovering from an injury. Guaves hopes that he would be 100 percent ready for the PNG slated May 19 to 25 in Cebu.
Guaves also bared that the bikes of the riders are being checked and some spare parts are needed. He is appealing to the city government of Davao to extend assistance to get their equipment ready for the races ahead. (With Brisbane Q. Titular, Father Saturnino Urios University Intern)
