FAVORITES Fide Master (FM) Austin Jacob Literatus and woman candidate master (WCM) Irish Yngayo, both hailing from Toril, led winners of the 2018 Calinan Fiesta Open Chess Tournament held recently at the Gaisano Grand Mall in Calinan, Davao City.
Literatus, a National University (NU) varsity scholar and consistent Uaap champion, lived up to his billing by edging out fellow 5.5-pointer Edsel Montoya via superior tiebreaks to clinch the open division title of the Swiss System format chessfest.
Montoya settled for the runner-up honors while Rodrigo Catayas (5.0), Jimmy Dano (5.0) and John Ray Batucan (5.0) occupied the next three spots.
Yngayo, a Senior High School student at the University of Mindanao (UM), earned five points after six rounds to annex the girls under 16 crown over Kristine Balugo (3.0) and Sophia Ripalda (2.0).
Meanwhile, Niel Sebastian Enoc, bested Wesley Jovan Magbanua and Wendell Jay Magbanua for the boys under 16 title while Marvin Denzel Rubio copped the boys under 13 plum over Ryan Gabriel Rasay and Juan Ryu Bagonoc.
Sofia Lorraine Deliva, Kyle Johann Ylanan and Monica Lorraine Togonon also shared the spotlight after topping their respective divisions.
Deliva prevailed over Lienne Faith Salajudin and Kathleen Joyce Laforteza in girls under 13 while Kyle Johann Ylanan demolished James Catayas and Jethro Renz Bagonoc in boys under 10.
In girls under 10, Togonon clinched the girls under 10 at the expense of Princess Dianna and Jasmine Grace Cabatana.
The winners received cash prizes and medals.
