NATIONAL Master (NM) Macacuna Macala topped the 8th Kalivungan Mindanao Open Chess Championships that closed Monday, August 27, 2018, at the Provincial Capitol in Amas, Kidapawan City.
After the nine-round Swiss System format chessfest, Macala egded fellow-eight pointer Jayson Salubre via superior tiebreaks to capture the open title of the event sponsored by Governor Emmlou "Lala" Talino-Mendoza.
Salubre, however, settled for the runner-up honors while international master (IM) Edgar Reggie Olay and Melchor Arcenas Jr. shared the third spot with identical seven points.
Rounding up the top 10 were Levi Mercado (6.5), Harrison Maam (6.5), Ferdinand Leysa (6.5), Jimmy Dano (6.5), Allen Mirano (6.0) and Jhonnel Balquin (6.0).
