DAVAO City's Ella Grace Moulic helped the De La Salle University (DLSU) women's chess team defend its University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) title Monday, October 29.
The DLSU Green Archers garnered a total of 43 points in the 14-round chessfest, outclassing University of the Philippines (29.5 points) and Adamson University (28.5) who clinched the silver and bronze, respectively.
Moulic, 20, of Buhangin, earned 11.5 points to capture the Board 3 gold medal. She won 10 matches, drew thrice and lost once.
"Special ang gold na ito kasi first time kong naglaro ng complete rounds," Moulic said in a Facebook interview with VoxPop Davao.
It's her fourth year with the Green Archers who emerged champion during her freshman, junior and senior year. They only settled for silver when she was a sophomore.
On her Facebook post, Moulic said she faced a lot of pressure and that it took two straight losses to realize that they have to work harder and confident enough to win the game.
Moulic said, "It's a wakeup call for us to never let down everyone especially our coaches... Thank you sa tiwala na kaya naming i-fill yung respective roles namin sa team. The encouragement na 'have fun in the game' at 'tiwala lang kay God at sa kakayahan ng isa't isa' motivated us to finish as champions this season."
The fourth year AB Sports Studies and AB Psychology student also thanked her seniors and family. To her teammates, Moulic shared, "Worth it ang iyak, pagod, sayaw at kanta kahit wala sa tono para ma motivate ang isa't-isa. We really fought a good fight. Till next season again."
She was pertaining to DLSU's board 1 gold medalist and UAAP most valuable player Mira Mirano, board 2 player Marie Antonette San Diego, Board 4 and rookie of the year Samantha Revita, board 5 Franchell Eds Javier and board 6 Daphne Dy.
In the men's event, Far Eastern University annexed the gold (40 points) while National University (34.5) and Adamson University (32) grabbed the next two medals.
