ALL police stations across Davao City reported a peaceful observance of Easter Sunday or locally known as “Sugat” on April 20, 2025, with no untoward incidents recorded in more than 30 churches, according to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).
Authorities described the day as generally calm and orderly, attributing the smooth conduct of activities to the close coordination between law enforcement units, local government offices, church authorities, and the active cooperation of the public during the traditional conduct of Sugat.
In anticipation of increased public movement throughout Holy Week from April 17 to 20, the city’s Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) has mobilized security personnel not only to major churches in urban centers but also to more remote churches, including those in Calinan and Marilog districts.
PSSO head Angel Sumagaysay said earlier this month that the deployment aims to ensure that all areas of Davao City are adequately covered for Holy Week services. He emphasized that while security teams are prepared, public cooperation remains key in maintaining peace and order during religious events.
He also confirmed that the PSSO received a formal request from Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles seeking security support during Holy Week.
As for traffic control, Sumagaysay said road closures in front of churches would be implemented only upon request from parish priests. These proposals must be submitted to the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) and the City Council for approval.
To recall, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared April 19 (Black Saturday) as a special non-working holiday through Proclamation No. 727, recognizing Holy Week as one of the most significant religious observances in the country.
As of this writing, the Philippine National Police (PNP) national headquarters has yet to release an official report on the overall peace and order situation nationwide during the Holy Week observance. However, local authorities in Davao City remain on heightened alert and continue to encourage the public to remain vigilant, follow safety protocols, and report any suspicious activity to ensure a safe and solemn celebration across all communities.
