A MAN sustained severe burns in a gas explosion at a construction site in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig City Wednesday evening, August 11, 2021.
Melchor Macalandia, 35, a safety officer at the construction site, suffered third degree burns in the face and upper extremities.
He was brought to the St. Luke's Medical Center for treatment, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said.
A police report said a backhoe hit a pipe, causing a gas explosion and a fire at around 6:05 p.m. at the construction site along the 21st Drive, 5th Avenue in BGC.
The incident reached first alarm at around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The BFP declared fire out at about 9:35 p.m., or two hours later.
No other establishments were affected by the incident.
Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano assured the residents in the area that there is no cause for alarm.
He said the injured person is already stable.
"The subsequent fire was also confined to the site of construction but for safety reasons, evacuation was carried out for the surrounding commercial properties," said Cayetano.
"Construction in the site will remain suspended pending investigation and safety assessment," he added. (VoxPop Philippines)
