MATINA Town Square has indeed gotten a fresh look, and along with it, places to dine in. Our choice for the night... after a few failed tries, was Fukunaga Burgers and Steak House.
And while Imee was raring to dig her teeth into some huge medium rare T-bone or Porterhouse steak, we ended up with burgers instead. The reason: they were out of steaks. Oh. Imee still stuck to her dream of a steak and ordered the Burger Steak (P150) plus Chili Fries (P100).
I searched for the item named after the place and found the Fukunaga Stuffed Burger (P250) and was attracted to the Fukunaga fries as well, but was told that it was the classic fries (no enhancement or whatever), so I stuck with the burger. The burger steak is made of two pieces served with rice and a sunny side up egg on top.
Imee was very hungry, she devoured it the moment it arrived. How did it taste? I don't know. I didn't get the chance to get a bite. The chili fries is a bit too hot for regular people. That meant, Imee could not have too much of it. It's fries topped with chili con carne. I sort of liked it, except that... I was already stuffed with my stuffed burger.
The stuffed burger is big. I should have expected that considering its price. But I sort of forgot.
Anyway, I thought I was hungry enough but soon realized that it was too big for my hunger. It has a blend of sweetness and tartness such that you don't need to throw in ketchup into the fray. It's best eaten with a fork and knife as trying to fit it in your mouth will be a struggle with all those sauces and fresh onion and tomato dripping all over.
It has just the right amount of mayo and cheese, but I would appreciate just one more piece of lettuce. Still, it was okay. Fukunaga has other burgers and pasta as well. Although the waitress said that their most-ordered food in the menu are their rice toppings.
Over-all? It's worth a visit to explore the other stuff in the menu. But don't expect fine dining, it's the diner type. Fukunaga is in that row of restaurants leading to Kanto Bar (where Whistle Top used to be).
