130 Million steps to awareness

DAVAOEÑOS from different walks of life contributed to 130 Million Steps for Breast Cancer awareness led by Avon Philippines last October 22, 2016.

Even before 6 a.m., the participants were already stoked and pumped up for the fun walk while clad with their workout attire as the first 100 participants were given shirts.

Celebrity Coach Toni Saret led the five-minute stretching which she said can help participants burn 500 calories.

After the workout, the group walked from People's Park, Claro M. Recto St. to Ponciano St. and then back to People’s Park.

It was a brisk and fun walk. Each participant did not just sweat it out in the streets as participating in the event also means contributing to breast cancer awareness through the use of an app. Yes, an app.

Avon team launched an Avon Pedometer App which makes it easier for everyone to set their step goals for the day and start walking. The app is very easy to access since anyone can just download it from the internet and sign up, and set their goal and start walking.

Anyone can just carry the phone close to their bodies- in a pocket, arm band, or shoulder bag and their steps could automatically be tracked even without internet connection.

When connected to the internet, the steps are automatically synced in grand total while tracking the contribution to the Avon Campaign of 130 Million Steps. The total number of steps required must be completed within the month of October.

Also by using the app, anyone can learn about Avon products that can be purchased to support the cause and can make a donation to the Philippine Cancer Society.

The funds raised will go to the maintenance of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) breast cancer center which serves thousands of indigent Filipino Women, assist breast Consultation activities of the Avon Representatives and sustain the monthly activities of the Avon-PGH Breast Care Support Group.

Dawn Niekamp of Avon Philippines noted the overwhelming attendance of participants.

Coach Jim, one of the celebrity coaches, said that this walk of awareness serves as his contribution to the anti-breast cancer crusade.

"It is our way of encouraging everyone to walk for a purpose for the month of October. This is a great opportunity for men and women to share their hopes with those who are affected by breast cancer,” Jim said.

Jim's partner, Toni, also said that health should always be given utmost importance and making every step count raises awareness to fight against the deadly disease.

Avon, a US-based company, has been supporting anti-breast campaign for years now and during the event they have distributed fans that bear instruction to women on how to detect breast cancer.
