APALIT -- Some 136 indigent students from this town recently received their salaries from the local government here after being enrolled in the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES).
The said beneficiaries received some P4,135, or 60 percent of their total salary, after rendering service in the different departments of the local government for 20 days.
Mayor Peter Nucom, who led the distribution of cash grants, urged the students to use their salaries wisely for their educational needs especially that classes have opened.
He stressed that the financial assistance is just a small amount, but the local government is always open for any support it can give to needy but deserving and hardworking students.
He added that the SPES program is only part of the many programs set by his administration for the education of Apaliteño youth.
Municipal Public Employment Service officer Jenny Gamboa said that the remaining 40 percent of the SPES salary amounting to P3,096 will be distributed by the Department of Labor and Employment.
The SPES program is an employment bridging program during summer or Christmas vacation that aims to augment Filipino families' incomes for poor but deserving students, out of school youth and displaced students by rendering service.
