A TOTAL 150 young wrestlers are expected to compete in the 31st Mayor Inday and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan Wrestling Tournament that will unfurl at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, at the Felcris Centrale along Quimpo Boulevard, Davao City.
Event organizer Paolo Tancontian along with Sambo Pilipinas president Bogs Quitain bared this during Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall B3 Bowling Center.
Tancontian said teams from Davao del Norte will compete along with entries from Ateneo de Davao University, Holy Child College of Davao, Panabo Central Elementary School, among other public schools in Davao.
"The event focused more on the grassroot level, kaya elementary and high school ang na invite namin," Tancontian added.
Quitain, for his part, said the International Sambo Federation (Fias) provided 50 sets of gi and wrestling shoes that will be used by the participants.
"Fias wanted us to promote sambo in the Philippines and through that they supported us with these wrestling gears," Quitain added.
The wrestlers are entered in different weight, height, and age categories.
The gold medalists will pocket P1,000 and a medal while the runner-up honors will receive medals.
Tancontian and Quitain are working out the group's affiliation with the Philippine Olympic Committee as they aim to hold a National Sambo Tournament in March next year.
The event is sponsored by the Sports Development Division-City Mayors Office and supported by the Sambo Union of Asia under director General Suresh Gopi and Sambo Pilipinas vice president lawyer Paulo Claudio.
