ABOUT 17,000 workers from a popular fast-food chain are set to become regular employees, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole).
Dole Secretary Silvestre Bello III said he has been informed that a company, which refused to be identified, is set to regularize 17,000 contractual workers.
“Meron nag-confide sa akin na big company, who said they will regularize 17,000 of their employees,” said Bello in an interview.
He said this would help the government break into its target of reducing the number of “endo” workers by 50 percent by the end of the year.
“That will reduce our target by almost 60 percent,” said the labor chief.
But sans the fast-food chain’s actions, Bello said they will likely come up short with their target of halving the number of “endo” workers before 2017.
“Medyo short lang kami pero konti lang... Between 80 to 90 percent of the 50 percent. We have already regularized around 28,000 plus workers,” said Bello.
“Endo” is an employment scheme used by some employers. It violates the law by hiring workers for less than six months in a bid to avoid having to regularize them. (Sunnex)
