240 fishermen join ‘Regatta de Zamboanga’

A TOTAL of 240 participants, mostly fishermen from the different villages, had registered to compete in the traditional race of colorful vinta sails popularly known as “Regatta de Zamboanga.”

The activity will be held on Sunday, October 8, starting at 7 a.m. at the R.T. Lim commonly known as the “Cawa-Cawa” Boulevard in Zamboanga City.

City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said that cash prizes are at stake for the winners of the regatta, which is expected to attract throng of people from all walks of life.

The cash prizes are as follows: P15,000, first place; P12,000, second; P10,000, third; P7,000, fourth; and, P5,000, fifth placer.

Salazar said the non-winners will receive P1,000 each as consolation prizes.

She said the “Best Vinta” will also be chosen and will receive P3,000 cash prize.

The regatta is one of the activities lined up in the ongoing celebration of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival.

Salazar said that at 7 p.m. Sunday, the Mascota competition will have a bevy of Zamboangueña beauties gracing the ramp in their traditional terno (evening gowns) known as Mascota at Paseo del Mar open stage. (Bong Garcia/VoxPop Philippines)
