A TOTAL of 32 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Davao Region were approved by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) to increase their tuition and other school fees for school year 2017 to 2018.
The approved applications represent 41 to 42 percent of the total number of 77 private HEIs in the region.
The Ched revealed on Tuesday, May 30, the approved average increase in tuition in Davao Region is 4.65 percent or P20.08 per unit, while increase in other school fees is 4.81 percent or P22.14 per unit.

14. Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation
15. Jose Maria College
16. Kapalong College of Agriculture Sciences and Technology
17. North Davao Colleges –Panabo
18. Philippine College of Technology
19. Philippine Women's College of Davao
20. Polytechnic College of Davao del Sur
21. St. Francis Xavier College Seminary
22. St. Mary's College of Tagum

Ched chairperson Patricia Licuanan said in a press statement that Ched’s approach to the issue of tuition is holistic.
“We ensure that HEIs meet the guidelines provided by law, especially the requirement of consultation, the proper allocation of tuition fees, and strict adherence with the processes that seek to make tuition and other school fee increases transparent, reasonable and affordable,” she said.
The law mandates that all HEIs shall allocate 70 percent of tuition increases to the salaries and other benefits of teaching and non-teaching personnel; 20 percent to the improvement of school facilities; and 10 percent to the return on investment if they are stock corporations.
The regional inflation rate, financial standing of the institution, financial capacity of the students, the impact of calamities, and school's track record are some of the agency’s considerations in approving tuition and other fees increase proposals.
There are 268 private HEIs approved by Ched to implement tuition and other school fees hike nationwide for this school year.
The approved applications represent 16 percent of the total number of 1,652 private HEIs in the country. This is 36 HEIs lower than the reported 304 HEIs last academic year. Of the 268 private HEIs, 262 will increase tuition while only 237 will increase other school fees.
